Research Interests

I am a marine larval and intertidal ecologist with research interests in the effect of larval supply, settlement and post-settlement mortality on the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. My recent research directions are:

1) Biogeography and diversity of barnacles in the NW Pacific waters
My Ph.D. study used two common rocky shore barnacle species, Tetraclita squamosa and Tetraclita japonica (Chan, 2001, 2003) as examples to study the effect of salinity and physical stress on the settlement and population dynamics of intertidal barnacles (Chan et al., 2001; Chan and Williams, 2003, 2004; Chan and Hung, 2005). To further study the effect of latitudinal gradient on the distribution pattern of intertidal assemblages in the Asian region, my recent research focusing on the distribution and population structure of Tetraclita spp. from Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa, Xiamen and Hong Kong (Chan et al., 2007a, b, c, d; Tsang et al., 2007; Chan et al., in press). In addition, I have involved in the design of a plankton trap (Yan et al., 2003) which can be used to monitor the effect of larval supply on the subsequent population structure of barnacles at different spatial scales. I have recently published a book on Taiwan barnacles (Chan and Lee, 2008).

2) Intertidal ecology

Besides working on the rocky intertidal system, I am also interested in sandy shore ecology (see Chan and Caley, 2003). I have studied the factors affecting the fitness of the sandy shore snail Batillaria zonalis (Chan and Chan, 2005) and developed techniques in investigating the burrow structure of soft shore organisms (Chan et al., in 2006; Lee et al., 2008). In addition, my recent research focuses on the ecology of the parasitic barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Rhizocephala).
